Because Google wants to show users the most relevant results for their searches, it looks at how many authoritative sites link back to a particular website when determining which websites deserve top placement on its search engine results pages or SERPs for short. So, if someone links to your site, that means that person thinks highly of it, so Google assumes others will too!.
