What is NAP consistency, and why is it important for local SEO?

NAP stands for name, address, and phone number. It’s basically the information that you need to publish on your website to make sure that Google knows where you’re located. Most of us already know that if you don’t have this information on your website, you won’t be able to rank as well. However, what if you do have it? Does that mean that you can just publish it once and call it a day?

In most cases, the answer is no, and here’s why. Google will penalize your site if they think that your NAP information is inconsistent. That means that there are multiple ways to find your business online, like by searching for an address or phone number, but none of those ways match up with each other. So, there’s no way for Google to know whether or not you really are located at that address or phone number, or even exist as a legitimate business at all!

In order to avoid this problem, experts recommend regularly updating any old information with new stuff so Google always has everything up-to-date on its servers.

Another reason why NAP consistency is so important is that Google has made it clear that they value businesses that have a strong presence in their community over businesses that aren’t present or don’t have a consistent presence. If you have inconsistent NAP across your different platforms, it can lead to what’s called duplicate content issues, which can negatively impact your rankings in Google Places and other local search engines.

Now, here are some tips for maintaining NAP consistency across your platforms.

When creating your online presence, make sure that you’re using the same name, address, and phone number across all channels. These are critical pieces of information that help customers find you online.

As much as possible, strive to keep your address consistent across these platforms as well. If they can’t be consistent, then at least use one of these three pieces of information consistently throughout each platform.

Finally, don’t forget about local directories like Yelp or the Yellow Pages! These directories can be a great way to drive traffic from people who are looking for businesses near them but don’t know where exactly those businesses are located or how to contact them directly.
